Next step: Pro-Bono or Public Interest Attorney

Dreaming a new dream: Mort is 70 years old and receiving his juris doctorate from ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ’s Pettit College of Law. He recently purchased a new car to reward himself for his academic achievement. He quotes C.S. Lewis to explain his motivation for a post-retirement degree: “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.â€

Law for good: After a productive career as a materials engineer and high school and college instructor, Mort didn’t want to idle away the hours. He felt called to help others, but in a role that was more critical than a volunteer. “I wanted to do something meaningful and challenging. That’s why I proceeded on my law school journey. I expect to focus on pro bono, public interest, public defender, or some combination of those options.â€

Academic challenge: Having not been a student for decades, Mort was taken aback by the academic rigor of law school. Several times he considered calling it quits; but whenever defeatism crept in, his wife, family, professors and/or fellow students inspired him to keep flexing his mental muscle. “It was a humbling experience going from being an expert in my field to a first-year law student. But on the plus side, I’ve noticed a big improvement in my memory.â€

Unexpected friendships: Another aspect of ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ Law that floored Mort was the camaraderie between his classmates. “I did not expect this level of acceptance, considering that I am old enough to be the parent or grandparent of most students. It has been a real joy getting to know my fellow students.â€

Counting down to relaxation: Law school kept Mort busy, and now he’s intensely studying for the bar exam. While he’s looking forward to some much-needed downtime, he has zero regrets about extending himself beyond his comfort zone for the past three years. “You don’t know what you’re capable of doing until you do it.â€
